Kiln Cafe

The shell was a kiln-yard store — brick, soot, a window that the previous tenant had boarded. We unboarded it.

The cafe is one room. A kadappa counter runs almost the length of it: espresso, pastry, and the till in a single line so two people can run service. Seating is a mix of two-tops and a shared table under the window. Cane chairs, not banquettes; the room should be able to empty and mop in ten minutes.

Brick is cleaned, not painted. Blackened steel frames the opening to the kitchen. Light is mostly the north window plus a few pendants. The interior should smell of coffee, not of a concept. Kiln Cafe is a neighbourhood room. It has to work on a Tuesday at 7.40 a.m.
